Fishing for plastics

Fishing for plastics
Did you know that there will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050? I am committed to make a change. We fish for plastic around the world and sometimes collect up to 8 tonnes of marine litter on a journey.

Did you know that there will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050?

My name is Mila. I fish in the Flanders to make a living. However the fish lately has been getting fewer and fewer. I wonder why..

One day my daughter came back from school telling me about plastic. They had been learning about it.

Plastic is now flooding our oceans, killing our animals. Even worse, it is broken down into small pieces, which becomes microplastic in the ocean. It’s in the water..fish eat it..we eat the fish (sigh). Scientists at Ghent University calculated that we eat up to 11,000 plastic fragments in our seafood every year!

I realized I’m part of the problem because I use plastic everyday: bottled water, single-use bags, straws. Even worse, my fishing nets.

Reduce-reuse-recycle.

I started feeling guilty. But I had to feed my family, I was in a serious dilemma. What should I do? Now, I am committed to make a change. We fish for plastic around the world and sometimes collect up to 8 tonnes of marine litter on a journey.

I have also changed my daily habits. Reduce-reuse-recycle. And now I am in a pioneer programme of using biodegradable fishing nets.

But I am not alone in this mission. I feel supported.

We still want fish to be in the sea by 2050. I am doing my part for it. Are you?
