Description2:

I am a teacher. I live in Ji-Paraná, one of the largest urban centres in the state of Rondônia, in the Northern Region of Brazil.

Here, it is still possible to get the benefit of some renewable resources. One of them is water from the river that flows through the city, supplying our homes and fulfilling our needs.

Two years ago, the river underwent a cleaning process, with two tons of garbage being collected. This year we went through a sanitary crisis. Solid waste was disposed of in inappropriate places, close to springs and an environmental preservation area.

Garbage is not a priority on the agenda of public policies.

Garbage is not a priority on the agenda of public policies.  According to the Recicla Jipa Movement, only 3% of the waste generated by the inhabitants of Ji-Paraná is currently recycled, but it could reach 40%. Despite this, Ji-Paraná could become an example of success for the North of Brazil. In 2012, a Ji-Paraná Recyclable Material Collectors Cooperative (COOCAMARJI) was founded with support from public and private initiative...

COOCAMARJI collects solid waste in some districts. It is intended to create a municipal law to make and expand the service. Vehicles and selective garbage containers are placed in various points around the city, called “ecopoints”. In addition to transmitting a positive message to the population, it encourages recycling and selective garbage collection, fulfilling an important social role.

It is our responsibility to dispose of garbage correctly!

It is good to remember that we are all responsible for waste disposal. And small everyday habits are large gestures in the preservation of Nature. What we throw away can be reused, recycled.

For example, the skins of fruits, as well as greens and vegetables are transformed into organic fertilizer, which we can use in our gardens. Among the things that can be produced from used cooking ail are soap, biodiesel and ink

Do you dispose of toxic and radioactive waste in common garbage containers?

It is our responsibility to dispose of garbage correctly!
